A Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE) is an orthodontic appliance designed to gradually widen a narrow upper jaw. When the upper jaw doesn’t develop wide enough, it can lead to crowded teeth, bite misalignment, and in some cases, mouth breathing or snoring. By expanding the upper arch, an RPE creates more room for teeth and supports proper facial development during critical growth years.

When Is an RPE Recommended?
Clear aligners may be recommended to address:
-
A narrow upper jaw (maxillary constriction)
-
Crowding due to limited space for new teeth
-
Crossbite (upper teeth fit inside the lower teeth)
-
Bite alignment concerns caused by jaw width issues
What Happens During Treatment?
The RPE is typically attached to the upper molars and adjusted over time—usually with the help of a parent. Children may feel mild pressure or soreness, and it’s common to see a small gap form between the front teeth early on. This is normal and tends to close naturally as treatment progresses.
Thinking About an RPE?
Schedule a complimentary orthodontic consultation to see if an RPE is the right step for your child’s smile and development. While RPEs are most commonly used in younger patients, adults may still qualify, depending on their needs and treatment goals.
