White Composite Fillings

Cavities happen, but at Kids Dental Pals & Orthodontics, we’re here to ensure your child’s smile remains healthy and beautiful. We proudly use white composite fillings as a safe, effective, and aesthetically pleasing way to treat cavities.

Composite fillings are made from a tooth-colored resin that bonds to the natural tooth structure, ensuring a seamless and natural appearance. Unlike amalgam fillings, which contain metals like mercury, our composite fillings are completely metal-free, making them a safer choice for your little ones.

Why Choose White Composite Fillings for Kids?

  • Blends naturally with your child’s teeth.
  • Strong and durable for long-lasting results.
  • Mercury-free and safer for your child’s health.
  • Minimally invasive placement to preserve healthy tooth structure.

We strive to make every dental visit as comfortable as possible, and our minimally invasive techniques ensure a positive experience for your child.

We Are an Amalgam-Free Office

At Kids Dental Pals & Orthodontics, your child’s health and safety are our top priorities. That’s why we are proud to be an amalgam-free office. We do not use mercury-containing amalgam fillings in any of our treatments. Instead, we prioritize modern, biocompatible materials that are both safe and effective.

Our commitment to being mercury-free means that you can trust us to provide dental care that supports your child’s overall health and well-being. Whether your child needs a filling, crown, or any other treatment, you can rest assured that we use only the safest and most advanced materials available.

Child Appropriate X-Rays

We only use the safest and lowest dose radiation digital x-rays. We follow the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s Guidelines for taking x-rays and employ a method known as ALARA, which stands for as “As Low as Reasonably Achievable.” This method means that we only take the x-rays necessary in order to diagnose and provide our patients with the most accurate understanding of their oral health. In addition, we use protective equipment to ensure maximum patient safety such as iron shields covering the patient’s chest and neck.
X-rays are necessary and important because they help the dentist detect what is not visible to the naked eye. Not all children require x-rays at their dental visit.

Frequently asked questions

At Kids Dental Pals & Orthodontics in Simi Valley, we understand that parents have plenty of questions about their child’s dental and orthodontic care. Below are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions to help you feel confident about your child’s journey to a healthy, beautiful smile.

General Dentistry FAQs

Q: At what age should my child have their first dental visit?

A: The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling your child’s first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth erupting.

Q: How often should my child visit the dentist?

A: Just like adults, children should see the dentist every six months for a routine cleaning and check-up to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Q: Do you accept Medi-Cal insurance?

A: Yes, we proudly accept Medi-Cal/Denti-Cal insurance to ensure every child has access to quality dental care. Please contact us to confirm coverage and discuss your specific benefits.

Q: What can I expect during my child’s first visit?

A: The first visit is typically focused on making your child comfortable in the dental chair. We’ll do a gentle exam, discuss proper oral hygiene, and answer any questions you may have.

Q: Are baby teeth really that important?

A: Absolutely! Baby teeth play a crucial role in speech development, chewing, and maintaining space for permanent teeth. Keeping them healthy is key to your child’s overall oral health.

Orthodontic FAQs

Q: What age should my child see an orthodontist?

A: The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. Early visits can help identify potential issues and determine if treatment is needed.

Q: Does my child need braces or Invisalign?

A: Treatment times vary depending on your child’s specific needs but typically range from 12 to 24 months. We’ll provide a personalized timeline during your consultation.

Dental Abscess FAQ

Q: What is the bump on my child's gums?

A. A dental abscess is a pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection in the mouth. It typically develops as a result of untreated tooth decay, gum disease, or dental injuries but can also arise from trauma to a tooth.

Common symptoms of a dental abscess include intense tooth pain, swelling in the gums or face, fever, sensitivity to hot and cold foods, and difficulty opening the mouth. In some cases, the abscess may rupture, releasing pus and providing brief relief, but this does not address the underlying infection.

If left untreated, a dental abscess can cause serious health complications, such as the spread of infection to other areas of the body, which can become life-threatening. Treatment often involves draining the abscess and addressing the infection source. This may include procedures such as a baby root canal, tooth extraction, or the use of antibiotics.

Prompt dental care is essential to prevent complications and preserve the affected tooth. If you suspect a dental abscess, your pediatric dentist at Kids Dental Pals can diagnose and provide the necessary treatment to resolve the infection and ensure your child’s oral health.

Preventative Care FAQs

Q: What are dental sealants, and does my child need them?

A: Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of molars to prevent cavities. They are especially beneficial for children with deep grooves in their teeth.

Q: How can I help my child prevent cavities?

A: Encourage proper brushing and flossing habits, limit sugary snacks and drinks, and schedule regular dental check-ups. Fluoride treatments and sealants also offer extra protection.

Emergency FAQs

Q: What should I do if my child knocks out a tooth?

A: If it’s a baby tooth, contact us for advice. If it’s a permanent tooth, gently rinse it, place it in milk, and call us immediately for emergency care.

Q: My child has a toothache. What should I do?

A: Rinse their mouth with warm water and check for any food lodged between the teeth. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and call our office to schedule an evaluation.
